Our Post is named after Roanoke native and Navy Veteran Irvin Lee Manning (6/23/1924 - 5/5/1992).
Yeoman Second Class Manning was enlisted in the Navy from 1943-1946. After completing training at US Naval Training Center Bainbridge in Maryland, he served on the USS Landing Ship Tank 222 assigned to the Pacific Theater during World War II. Manning also served on US Ships LST 273, LCT 13, the Appalachian, and the Harry Lee. During his service, Yeoman Manning was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal w/4 stars, the Philippine Liberation Medal w/2 stars, the American Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
After returning to Virginia, Irvin married Betty Yates in 1947.
In addition to being a member of the VFW, he was also an active member of the DAV.
